VoIP Bandwidth Calculator

Use our VoIP bandwidth calculator to see how much bandwidth you will need to run multiple simultaneous calls over your broadband internet connection. When you consider running more than one call at the same time, Quality of Service (QoS) needs to be enabled in order to maintain call quality, and we highly recommend using ViBE for a great VoIP experience.

  Inputs

1. Select Codec Type1

    or input bandwidth2

2. Sample period

3. ViBE3

  Technical results

Packets per second

Payload size
octets

IP/UDP/RTP bandwidth4
kbps

Ethernet bandwidth5
kbps

In plain English, this means you could have

to

concurrent calls over 128kbps - 256kbps of synchronous bandwidth

to

concurrent calls over 384kbps - 512kbps of synchronous bandwidth

to

concurrent calls over 640kbps - 768kbps of synchronous bandwidth

to

concurrent calls over 896kbps - 1024kbps of synchronous bandwidth

Using the selected codec and sample period, each concurrent call will consume roughly:

Kilobytes of bandwidth per minute

Megabytes of bandwidth per hour

Notes:

1 - Selecting Codec type will automatically select a recommended sample size
2 - Enter a bandwidth manually if the codec is not listed
3 - ViBE reduces the bandwidth consumption by 80% and increases concurrency by over 400%.
4 - IP/UDP/RTP headers added to payload assumes a fixed 40 octet overhead
5 - Adds a further 38 octets for the Ethernet preamble (8), header (14), CRC (4) and Inter-frame gap (12)
